Top 7 Questions To Ask Your First-Party Data Provider: How Do I Get the Data?

by Julia Giacoboni, Director of Product Marketing

If you are on the search for a data provider, there are some very important questions you’ll need to ask them before partnering with them. You will need to make sure you understand how to get the data and how they are providing it to you.

Don’t get stuck screaming, “Show me the data!” into a void.

Make sure from the get-go that your provider can illustrate a clear outline of how you and your team will access and utilize it once set-up is complete.

Some Follow-Up Questions

  • What kind of format is it coming in?
  • Does it still need to be cleaned, scrubbed, or validated?
  • Is there a Dropbox account or a program you need to access it—and if so, is there an additional cost?

There should be multiple ways available for you to access your data. Your viable options may vary, depending on how robust or comfortable your team is with technology and the types of products/platforms you currently work with.

Self-Serve Exports

Often, a familiar way to grab or receive the data is through a user-friendly dashboard with an export button. This way, you get a file and your team can do whatever they want with it manually—like upload it to your ad campaign or use it as a list for a direct mail piece.

This method can be implemented via a secure file-sharing service, a warehouse, or a clean room. At fullthrottle.aiTM, we house your audiences in a secure place that only your team can access. It’s gated and private—and requires specific permission to get into.

Note: If you are receiving your data in a document or through an insecure method, that is a major red flag.

Audience API

If your team is tech-savvy and you know you want to pipe the audiences into your own tech stack, for example, taking advantage of the API is probably the best route. This way, you will be able to automatically funnel the information directly where it is supposed to go. While it might require a bit more extra set-up, once the information is flowing smoothly, the process should be mostly hands-off.

Just make sure you know exactly how to access your audiences before you sign an agreement with a vendor.  You want your team to be capable and comfortable with the data procurement process from start to finish.
